Purpose and aims

The purpose of 2nd Summer School DeST2019 is to identify, understand and reflect about approaches, strategies, processes and practices which have been contributing to the transformation and vitalization of the Portuguese inland rural and peripheral areas. It is intend to cross-compare the models and policies (in text as well as in practice), which constitute the theoretical framework for the implementation of those transformative dynamics, with real case studies. To accomplish this, fieldwork will serve to examine and explain the possible convergence, divergence and/or tension between scientific conceptual idealizations and the actual strategies used to promote the territory by the agents that dwell in place. Complementing these debates and contacts with local experiences a series of sessions concerning methodological issues will take place, focusing on data analysis, scientific writing and publication.

Goals

Main objectives:

  • Strengthen the familiarization with the theoretical frames, models and policies that guide innovation, competitiveness, sustainability and territorial transformation, focusing particularly on place-based socio-economic development models.
  • Compare conceptual models with concrete cases in order to produce reflexivity and dialectic reasoning between theory and empirical reality.
  • Encourage participants to comprehend the views held by the agents in the territory and to perceive the eventual political constraints that hinder innovative initiatives and territorial transformation.
  • Improve methodological, analytical, scientific writing and publishing competences, namely through the production of working papers on the studied cases.
