This Symposium, evocating the 20th anniversary of the classification of the Alto Douro Wine Region as World Heritage Site, will offer a stage for the presentation of papers and lectures on studies and projects within the fields of History and Geography, Arts and Literature, Cultural Heritage and Environmental Studies, as well as a place of dialogue and sharing of experiences, strategies, methodologies and good practices of management and appreciation of the above-mentioned heritage. Its scope encompasses the fourteen European wine region cultural landscapes that were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage between 1997 and 2015, located in seven different countries: Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland, which establishes the historical, cultural and natural importance of the European viticulture1. The classification, under several criteria, includes the historical-geographic site, traditional wine grape varieties characteristic of each region, as well as vineyard and wine production techniques, with the holders having to prove they are part of a scenario with an exceptional universal value and that wine production is a determinant factor in the natural landscape and in the cultural and historical context of the territories and inhabitants. In addition to the History and Geography of the places and regions, the classification highlights elements such as the local identity, tradition-innovation, material and intangible heritage, environment and human work, both historically and socially incorporated, as well as traditional and technical-scientific techniques and knowledge of the vineyard and wine culture, the singularity of grapevines and vineyards, the renowned quality of the wines and the authenticity of the terroirs.
Within this context, this scientific and cultural event also aims to broaden and strengthen the networking between institutional representatives, scholars and researchers of the European wine regions with the UNESCO World Heritage, to present and debate lines and opportunities of research and collaboration and to help identify the relevant advantages of this classification for the regions and populations comprised by it.
The central theme of the Symposium focuses on the indications, representations and symbolism of the «exceptional universal value» of the World Heritage European wine region cultural landscapes, in their diversity, singularity and similarities.
