The General Secretariat of Culture is the organ of the General Administration of the Autonomous Community of Galicia which is responsible for exercising its powers in the promotion of culture, cultural heritage and aspects related to the protection of the cultural heritage of the Roads from Santiago. Among its main functions we can emphasize the following:

  • The defense and promotion of the cultural values of the Galician people.
  • The promotion of culture, contribution to the development of the book, collaboration in the promotion of plastic arts, dance, music, and the lyrical and choreographic arts.
  • The direction and coordination of the attributions of the consellería in the matter of promotion of the book and the reading, as well as in the matters of libraries and archives.
  • The support to the editorial production and the elaboration of plans respecting the policy of the book, according to the cultural needs of Galicia.
  • The encouragement of literary creation.
  • The protection of historical, artistic, architectural, archaeological, paleontological, ethnological and documentary heritage, as well as archives, libraries and museums in Galicia.

The coordination and supervision of the activities of the Galician Center for Contemporary Art.
